Prior to my 32nd birthday, I was diagnosed with cancer. This news came just before purchasing my first home, which was such a meaningful blessing as a single mom. While still processing the news of cancer, I began moving into my new home. That process came to a halt as another untimely bomb was dropped—the house I purchased had severe black mold that was concealed during the transaction. From there, I was left practically homeless with two young girls in tow. I immediately began considering housing options and emergency resources, as I had surgery scheduled for the cancer in just a few months.

Queue being recommended Blue Cancer Connect, which has been nothing short of a hand-placed miracle by God. I was assisted by Vickie Speed, who was professional, empathetic, and personable. I didn’t know Vickie, and she didn’t know me, yet she listened to me describe my situation and shared her personal story of how cancer has touched her own life.

Vickie partnered me with a reputable law firm, who is currently assisting me to pursue a worker’s compensation case.

Moreover, Vickie supported me by attending a special fundraiser organized and thrown by my local cancer foundation to help with the cost of remediating my home and benefiting my cancer journey. Blue Cancer Connect travelled from another city to do this, which deepened the impression they made on me.

In real time, I saw how the care and compassion shown to me were exemplary to Vickie’s character and resilience in the face of her own personal loss. Thank you Vickie and thank you Blue Cancer Connect for your time and your sacrifice in making a difference in others’ lives.

After receiving the phone call announcing that I had cancer, I sank into a moment of darkness. As law enforcement, we are taught the fight or flight mentality, however, neither of those options was an option for me. For me, all I could think about was my children. There was so much left for me to do in their development and happiness. The only question I had was “What will happen to them?” I came to terms with the reality that cancer is not a sprint, but a marathon. And it’s a long one filled with stress. Not “I’m late for work” stress, but “Did the doctors get all the cancer so that I can live” stress. Somewhere in the middle of my journey, a close friend told me about Blue Cancer Connect, an organization that helps members of law enforcement in their cancer journeys. I was lost in the sea of questions and lack of guidance, so I decided to call.

Not only did I receive much-needed guidance from Vickie Speed, the organization’s founder, but I also was a connected with a mentor who’d been through the same situation. Talking with those two people gave me a more positive outlook and a willingness to accomplish the things I had no idea I needed to do.
